Integration

Slack integrationWhat it reads

Send cost anomalies, budget warnings, incidents and uptime alerts to a Slack channel. Add the Slack app to acknowledge alerts or approve fixes from Slack.

Slack alerts work on every plan, Free included. Approving a fix from Slack needs Growth ($149 a month).

What does MarshalCloud do with Slack?

  • MarshalCloud sends: cost anomalies, budget warnings, security findings, uptime and certificate alerts, incidents, and scheduled cost summaries.
  • Where one-click fixes are on, it posts a proposed fix in plain words with a link to approve it. With our Slack app added, that message also carries Approve fix and Not now buttons, and alerts carry Acknowledge, Snooze, Assign and Resolve. Nothing changes until someone presses Approve fix.
  • A Slack approval counts only when Slack's signature, a one-time code on that button, your workspace and your approver list all check out. It then takes the same approval path as the app.

Read-only is the default everywhere. A fix is drafted, priced and explained, and then waits for a person to approve it.

What MarshalCloud never does in Slack

  • MarshalCloud does not read your Slack messages. Alerts go out through a webhook to one channel. The optional Slack app is a bot that can post, open a channel for an incident and look up the email of the person who pressed a button; it asks for no permission to read messages.
  • The webhook URL is never shown back to anyone, in the interface or in a log: a failed delivery records the type of error and the host, never the address.
  • An empty approver list means nobody can approve from Slack, which is the default.

How do you connect Slack?

  1. 01In Slack, create an incoming webhook for the channel you want the alerts in.
  2. 02Paste the URL into MarshalCloud's alert settings and send a test message.
  3. 03For buttons, press Add to Slack in the same settings, then list the Slack users allowed to approve. Leave the list empty and nobody can approve from Slack.

Questions about the Slack integration

01What does MarshalCloud send to Slack?

Cost anomalies, budget warnings, security findings, uptime and certificate alerts, incidents and scheduled cost summaries, as messages in the channel your webhook points at. On Growth it can also post a proposed fix; with our Slack app added, that message carries Approve fix and Not now buttons.

02Can MarshalCloud read my Slack messages?

No. Alerts go out through a webhook to one channel. The optional Slack app asks for no permission to read messages: what comes back is a click on a button MarshalCloud posted, or a /marshal incident command someone typed.

03Is approving a fix from Slack safe?

A click counts only when it carries Slack's own request signature, a one-time code MarshalCloud put on that button, a workspace that matches yours, and a Slack user you listed as an approver. It then runs through the same approval path as the button in the app, and the message is replaced so it cannot be clicked twice.

Connect Slack read-only

Alerts, incidents and budget warnings in a channel, through a webhook you paste.
